Jerry Cosgrove

Jerry CosgroveEarly in the life of Jerry Cosgrove, he took more than an interest in agriculture which turned into a lifelong passion. Jerry was raised on a farm in New York. His intimate understanding of the farming way of life has also motivated him in helping others to get the most out of their farms.

Jerry is a very community minded person and is active whenever the opportunity arises on issues that affect his community. He is an agriculture expert that truly understands the many obstacles that new farmers struggle with, because he has experienced it within his own family. The fact is that American farmers need help — two acres of farmland are being lost every minute.

America relies on local farmers more than anyone realizes, and the average age of farmers now is 57. If local farming was to disappear, it would shut down the American economy and the food that people eat would have to come from other countries. This is something Jerry fears may happen one day if farmers in America don’t get the help they need.

Jerry Cosgrove’s Efforts to Help New Farmers

Jerry is seriously concerned that one day the type of life that he grew up in will no longer exist. It would be a world many would not want to see and this has motivated him to encourage new farmers to join local organization to get the help they need. Jerry actively promotes the National Young Farmers Coalition and the Greenhorn organization which help new farmers. Both groups provide much guidance and help to new farmers just starting out.

Another organization that Jerry Cosgrove supports is the Foundation Local Economies Project. He currently is serving as the associate director. Jerry would like to discover ways to create a sustainable regional food system network, and he is working with the project to accomplish this. Farming today is changing quickly and isn’t the same as when Jerry was growing up. Surprisingly the biggest threat to farmers in the US today is from farmland being sold and turned into subdivisions. Farming families are along in age and many times have no one to take over their farming way of life, so they end up selling their land to developers.

Starting a new farm is much more difficult than trying to maintain an existing one. With the ever increasing legislation geared toward large corporations, the small and medium American farmers can only hope to barley make it. This is where the Local Economies Project comes in to help in key areas in support of local farmers. Some of the key areas of help include promoting local communities to change to more efficient ways of farming, and to help implement those changes.

As a consultant Jerry Cosgrove has helped communities develop their own agricultural farming organizations. He actively tries to find ways that farmers can gain access to capital to develop and start farms. Agricultural expert Jerry Cosgrove continues to make an impact on local communities by participating in projects that positively affects the farming world. Times are much different from the days when the young agriculturist Jerry Cosgrove grew up, but that doesn’t stop him from helping the next generation of farmers experience the joy of owning a farm.
